Exploring the Universe: My Experience at ASEAN Astronomy Camp

By Namo, Year 12

On 10–13 March, I attended the AAC (ASEAN Astronomy Camp), where I visited a range of sites and took part in lectures on astronomy. I had the opportunity to see Southeast Asia’s largest radio and optical telescopes, along with engineering and research facilities, and even went stargazing at the peak of Doi Inthanon. Alongside this, there were many enjoyable activities that helped students from around the world bond over our shared passion for astronomy.

Before attending, I went through an application process which involved creating a two-minute video introducing myself, explaining why I wanted to join, and why I should be selected. This process was slightly stressful and required a great deal of khanti (patience), but it also reminded me that I can always rely on the support of those around me.

During the camp, I didn’t just learn about electromagnetic waves and observational astronomy—I also had the chance to use hands-on tools such as a Dobsonian telescope. I explored astronomy from different cultural perspectives and created meaningful memories with people from across the globe.

This was a completely new experience for me, and I was amazed by the laboratories and equipment we visited. I made many new friendships with both students and staff, and further developed my interest in astronomy in ways that connect to my future career path.

Stepping out of my comfort zone has given me memories that will stay with me for a lifetime. There are opportunities everywhere, and you never know what might come your way—it never hurts to try.

I will truly miss this camp. Thank you to all the organisers for such a wonderful experience.
