By Namo, Year 12
The recent International Award Practice Gold Adventurous Journey proved to be one of the most demanding experiences we have faced, testing both our physical endurance and mental resilience, even after completing four prior hikes.
The International Award, also known as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, is a globally recognised programme that encourages young people to develop skills, take on physical challenges, and complete an Adventurous Journey. The Gold Award is the highest level and requires a significant commitment, including months of preparation and both a practice and qualifying expedition.

This year’s expedition was not just about reaching the finish line. We set out with a clear research focus to examine how leaf morphology and tree growth vary under different environmental conditions. Along the way, we gathered data through photographs and detailed observations, turning the journey into a hands-on scientific investigation as well as a personal challenge.
Preparation played a key role in our progress. Learning from past experiences, we packed more efficiently, ensured essential items such as tissues were not forgotten, and refined our navigation skills to move more confidently through the terrain.
Throughout the journey, we demonstrated the core values of Viriya and Khanti, perseverance and patience, as we pushed through fatigue and difficult conditions together. Our team spirit remained strong as we encouraged each other every step of the way. This shared motivation reflected Indriya-Samvara and Chanda, as we stayed focused, enthusiastic, and determined not just to complete the hike, but to make it meaningful.

Beyond the physical challenge, the experience also built a deeper connection with nature. By closely studying plant life and observing environmental variation firsthand, we gained a new appreciation for the natural world around us.
The Practice Gold Adventurous Journey has left us better prepared, more confident, and ready to take on the challenges of the upcoming Qualifying Adventurous Journey.
